Narberth, Pa., entrepreneur Aaron Muderick, who manufacturers the stuff, decided to hire only people with intellectual disabilities when he expanded his business 10 years ago.
Finding work is a source of frustration for many people with intellectual disabilities. After high school, opportunities and programs dwindle, and what to do all day becomes a major issue.
Working with a sheltered workshop is much more expensive than sending manufacturing across the world, “but I just didn’t want to go down this path,” Muderick says. “Guys on the floor get to talk to me, and I get to talk to them, and we have a relationship.”
